The Truth About the “Google Photos 1 TB Plan”: Navigating Cloud Storage Choices
When people go looking to upgrade their cloud storage for pictures and videos, they almost always search for a “Google Photos 1 TB plan.” It makes total sense—1 terabyte has long been the gold standard milestone for digital hoarders, photography enthusiasts, and families looking to back up decades of memories.
However, if you head over to Google looking specifically for a 1 TB tier, you might be surprised by what you find (or rather, what you don’t find). Google structures its storage tiers a bit differently than you might expect.
The Catch: Google Doesn’t Actually Have a 1 TB Plan
If you check the current Google One lineup—the subscription service that powers extra storage for Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive—you will notice a glaring omission: there is no standalone 1 TB option.
Instead, Google skips straight from smaller tiers to a massive jump:
- 100 GB (The entry-level paid tier)
- 200 GB (An intermediate step for moderate users)
- 2 TB (The next major consumer tier after 200GB)
Years ago, Google did offer a 1 TB tier, but it was phased out and automatically upgraded to 2 TB for the exact same price point.
