Before the Spotlight: The Making of Song Kang, South Korea’s “Son of Netflix”

Long before he was breaking global streaming records, commanding multi-million-dollar luxury brand campaigns, or melting hearts in supernatural K-dramas, Song Kang was just a quiet, introverted kid navigating life in Suwon, South Korea.

Often hailed today as the “Son of Netflix” due to his unprecedented run of hit original series, Song Kang’s journey to stardom wasn’t an overnight fairytale. It was a gradual evolution defined by quiet introspection, unexpected childhood ambitions, and a late-blooming passion for the dramatic arts.

An Athletic and Artistic Blueprint

Born on April 23, 1994, Song grew up in a household that naturally balanced physical discipline with creative expression. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. This environment subtly ingrained in him an early appreciation for body movement and rhythm—traits that would later pay dividends when he had to undergo intense physical training, including ballet lessons, for roles like Navillera.

However, acting wasn’t his first love. Growing up, Song was a remarkably shy and reserved student. When asked about his early career aspirations, he didn’t dream of the red carpet. Instead, inspired by home-design television shows, he originally set his sights on becoming an architect or furniture designer.

The Turning Point: Finding His Voice

As he transitioned into young adulthood, Song experienced a shift. After moving to Seoul to attend Konkuk University’s Department of Film Arts, he began living on his own for the first time.

To cope with the initial loneliness of city life, Song picked up a habit that he maintains to this day: keeping a diary. Writing candidly about his daily strengths and flaws helped him build self-confidence, push past his introverted shell, and understand human emotion more deeply. Cinema soon captivated him—particularly films like The Butterfly Effect—inspiring a deep-seated desire to evoke those same powerful emotional responses in others. He decided to pivot entirely toward acting, throwing himself into auditions with raw determination.

The Rookie Years: Gaining Momentum

Before landing his breakout role, Song paid his dues through classic stepping stones of the Korean entertainment industry:

  • Music Videos & Minor Roles: He made his official acting debut in the 2017 tvN series The Liar and His Lover as a lovestruck supporting guitarist. He also cut his teeth appearing in emotional music videos for artists like Suran and The Ade.
  • Variety and Hosting Exposure: Proving his charming off-screen personality, Song stepped into the limelight as a co-host of the popular music program SBS Inkigayo in 2018 alongside SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu and DIA’s Chaeyeon. He also joined the fixed cast of the mystery variety show Village Survival, the Eight.

From Ground Zero to Global Icon

When looking back at “Song Kang before,” the contrast highlights his sheer grit. The boy who was once too shy to crack jokes comfortably in public transformed himself into a powerhouse capable of leading massive global hits like Sweet Home, Nevertheless, and My Demon.

His pre-debut years prove that even the biggest stars start from humble, ordinary beginnings—relying on quiet self-reflection, private diaries, and a willingness to step far outside their comfort zones to find where they truly belong.
