Bring Your Own Beats: How to Add Your Personal Music Library to Spotify

Have you ever found a rare remix, an unreleased demo, or an independent track that isn’t available on any streaming platform, only to wish it lived right alongside your favorite daily playlists?

While Spotify hosts millions of tracks, you aren’t limited strictly to its catalog. Through a feature called Local Files, you can seamlessly blend your own audio library into your Spotify experience across both desktop and mobile devices.

Step 1: Enable Local Files on Your Desktop App

Before Spotify can display your personal tracks, you need to point the desktop application toward the folder where your music lives.

  1. Open the Spotify desktop app on your Mac or PC.
  2. Click your Profile picture in the top-right corner and select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Your Library section.
  4. Toggle on Show Local Files.
  5. Once toggled, a Show songs from section will appear. Click Add a source to select the folder on your computer where your music files are saved.

Supported Formats: Spotify supports standard audio files including MP3, MP4, and FLAC. Note that Apple Music’s protected M4P files or cloud-only files cannot be played directly through this feature.

Step 2: Create a Local Files Playlist

Now that Spotify recognizes your folder, you can access and organize your tracks.

  1. In the left-hand sidebar, click on your library or look for a newly populated playlist titled Local Files.
  2. Open the Local Files folder to see all the compatible tracks Spotify has successfully imported from your designated source folder.
  3. Select your desired tracks and add them to a custom playlist (or create a new one specifically for your personal music).

Step 3: Sync Your Music to Your Mobile Device

Listening to your custom tracks on your computer is great, but taking them on the go is where the magic happens. To stream your local files on your smartphone or tablet, follow these steps:

  1. Ensure your desktop computer and your mobile device are connected to the exact same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Open the Spotify app on your mobile device and navigate to the playlist containing your local files.
  3. Tap the Download button (the down-arrow icon) on that playlist.
  4. Spotify will securely transfer the files over your local network from your computer to your phone.

Quick Troubleshooting Checklist

If your tracks aren’t showing up or refusing to play on mobile, run through this quick checklist:

  • Check the Network: Both devices must be on the exact same Wi-Fi network during the initial download.
  • File Formats: Confirm your files are in a standard format like .mp3 or .flac.
  • Mobile Settings: On mobile, go to Settings > Local Files and make sure Show audio files from this device is enabled.

By following these simple steps, you can bridge the gap between your independent audio collection and your everyday streaming habits, keeping all your favorite music in one unified place.
