Mysore Airport Runway Length: Current Specs, Limitations, and Expansion Plans
Mysore Airport (commonly known as Mandakalli Airport, IATA: MYQ), serving the historic and cultural capital of Karnataka, India, plays a vital regional transportation role. However, its physical infrastructure—particularly its runway dimensions—has long been a topic of discussion among aviation experts, local authorities, and travelers eager to see larger aircraft connect directly with the city.
Current Runway Specifications and Capabilities
Mysore Airport features a single, concrete-paved runway designated as 09/27.
- Length: 1,740 meters (5,709 feet)
- Width: 30 meters (98 feet)
- Surface Type: Rigid concrete
- Elevation: 731 meters (2,398 feet) above mean sea level
Because of these dimensions, the airport is strategically tailored for short-to-medium-haul regional aviation. It is fully equipped to handle turboprop aircraft such as the ATR 72 and ATR 42, which are routinely deployed by carriers operating regional routes under initiatives like India’s UDAN scheme to connect Mysore with hubs like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Goa.
The Bottleneck: Why Narrow-Body Jets Can’t Land Yet
While Mysore boasts a rich heritage and a thriving tourism and industrial ecosystem, the existing 1,740-meter runway length acts as a hard constraint for larger commercial airliners.
Common narrow-body jet aircraft like the Airbus A320 or Boeing 737 typically require runway lengths starting around 2,000 to 2,500 meters (depending on payload, temperature, and altitude constraints) to operate safely and efficiently. Consequently, major airlines cannot deploy standard mainline jets to Mysore, forcing travelers to rely heavily on connecting flights or ground transit through Bengaluru (Kempegowda International Airport) for international and long-haul domestic travel.
Future Expansion and Upgrades
Recognizing the economic and tourism potential of unlocking direct, long-range connectivity, state and central authorities have pushed forward plans to transform the facility:
- Target Dimensions: Proposals and funding allocations have targeted expanding the runway length to 2,750 meters (approx. 9,000 feet) with a width of 45 meters.
- Land Acquisition: Expanding the runway requires acquiring significant tracts of surrounding land (exceeding 240 acres), a process backed by state funding installments and local administration oversight.
- Long-Term Vision: Once the runway extension and associated terminal upgrades are completed, Mysore Airport is slated to handle full-fledged commercial jet operations, paving the way for broader national and international connectivity.
Until these major civil works are finalized, the 1,740-meter stretch remains a classic example of how critical infrastructure dimensions directly shape a city’s global economic footprint.
